Training - the key to a robust study
Hazop Training is a key Process safety metric in any Process Industry. Hazop methodology has been time-tested and fine tuned over decades of practice. To be able to contribute effectively and meaningfully, Engineers participating in a Hazop study need to be well trained, prior to the commencement of the study. Infact, No training, No participation-should be the norm. Why? Because, any Hazard scenario missed in the Hazop study, will only be discovered on-site, in (hopefully) a near miss incident or worse, an incident! !!! Untrained engineers will most likely miss-out on critical hazard scenarios…
LOPA or Layer of Protection Analysis is a semi quantitative method to assess the adequacy of safeguards. Estimating the adequacy of safeguards based solely on qualitative means (experience, technical judgement etc.) can be subjective. LOPA provides an objective method based on degree of severity and likelihood of the consequence developed in the Hazop study. An invaluable by-product is the SIL assessment of any safety instrumented functions that maybe deployed as safeguards.
